Kuala Terengganu by-election to share dates with state polls, says EC

PUTRAJAYA: The by-election for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat will be held concurrently with the polls for six states, announces the Election Commission.

This means that polling date for the by-election will be on Aug 12 while nomination is fixed on July 29.

Early voting will be on Aug 8.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh announced the dates after a meeting was held to determine important dates for the by-election.

The seat fell vacant after the Terengganu Election Court, on June 27, cancelled the victory of Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim of PAS.

Ahmad Amzad won the seat in the 15th general election.

Judge Mohd Firus Jaffril said the petitioner, namely Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong, succeeded in proving that corruption had taken place with the aim of influencing voters in GE15.

He said although the petitioner was not presented as a witness, other evidence was sufficient to declare the election in Kuala Terengganu null and void, according to Section 35 of the Election Offences Act.

Following the court decision, PAS had said that it would ot appeal the election petition decision, saying that it is prepared to face an eventual by-election.

In GE15, Ahmad Amzad won the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat with a majority of 40,907 votes after defeating three other challengers, including Mohd Zubir.

Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan will hold their respective state polls.

These states did not participate in the elections during GE15.
